Things to do in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo
Most visitors flock to the water and sand, from scuba diving amongst rocks of Los Morros de Potosi to horseback riding on the sands of Playa Larga. Rent snorkelling and water sports gear at Playa Las Gatas, where you’ll also find endless stalls, shacks and eateries doling out coconut juice and fresh seafood morsels.
For adventurous water-centric sports, head to Playa La Ropa for parasailing, jet skiing and Hobie Cat rentals. Take a short boat ride to Ixtapa Island, departing from the pier at Playa Linda, to indulge in beachside massages and sizzling seafood from thatch-roofed open-air cafes.
Travelling with little ones? Spend an afternoon at the Delfiniti Dolphinarium for swimming with dolphins. Naturalists also give insight into dolphin behaviour and interactions. The family can observe reptiles and huge iguanas inside the Cocodrilario wildlife preserve.
Don’t miss a rare chance to roam through ancient Mayan ruins at Xihuacan Museum and Archaeological Site, just a 30-minute drive from Ixtapa. The small museum showcases excavated artefacts, including ceramics, axes and vases. Seek out the Soledad de Marciel pyramid, one of the most famous remnants of Mayan culture.
Getting around Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo
When arriving by air at Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport, you can rent a car for the 30-minute drive to either city. Buses frequent the resorts, beaches, restaurants and major attractions. Taxis, resort shuttles and “colectivo” vans service the area.
