About Zelenogradsk

Overlooking the Baltic Sea, Zelenogradsk is a popular resort town in Kaliningrad Oblast. It was known by its German name, Cranz, until the end of World War II when Soviet troops entered the town and renamed it Zelenogradsk. It lies at one end of the scenic Curonian Spit and the bird-filled landscapes of Kurshskaya Kosa National Park.

Things to do

Spend a day relaxing on the pebbly beach of Zelenogradsk, which stretches the entire length of the city. There are changing rooms, children’s playgrounds and recreational facilities backing the beach, as well as a bicycle path and a breezy promenade that’s particularly atmospheric at sunset.

Around 50 kilometres of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Curonian Spit lies in Russian territory and is protected within Kurshskaya Kosa National Park. Head to the visitor centre near Lesnoy to pick up a map of the area, then kick back on one of the pristine, dune-backed beaches. The lagoon side of the spit provides important habitat for a variety of waterfowl and wading birds and is a resting point for migratory species travelling along the Baltic Flyway.

Zelenogradsk is a convenient base for sightseeing in Kaliningrad, which was largely reconstructed following World War II. Marvel at the elaborate Gothic architecture of the Königsberg Cathedral and photograph the 19th-century King’s Gate before browsing the diverse array of amber artwork on display at the outstanding Amber Museum.

Getting around

Zelenogradsk is around 40 minutes’ drive from Kaliningrad and 15 minutes from Khrabrovo Airport, which has flights to destinations across Russia. Trains connect from Kaliningrad to the Kranz railway station, from where you can easily access Zelenogradsk’s attractions on foot. Having your own vehicle is best for visiting Kurshskaya Kosa National Park.
