Where to stay in Dugi Otok

About Dugi Otok

One of the largest islands in the Adriatic Sea, Dugi Otok lies just off Croatia’s Dalmatian coast near the city of Zadar. It’s renowned for its pristine natural beauty, blissful beaches and charming villages. It also offers easy access to Kornati National Park.

Things to do

Some of the most spectacular landscapes on Dugi Otok are protected within Telašćica Nature Park, which encompasses a beautiful bay in the far south of the island. Kick back on one of the idyllic beaches while marvelling at the soaring cliffs or bathe in the therapeutic saltwater of Lake Mir.

Just off the southern tip of Dugi Otok is Kornati National Park, which encompasses an archipelago of around 80 islands that have become a hub for sailing and diving. You can charter a yacht to navigate the turquoise waters at your leisure or venture underwater with one of the local dive operators to explore the marine life-filled caves, crevices and tunnels.

Overlooking the northwestern tip of Dugi Otok is Croatia’s tallest lighthouse, which is located in its namesake village of Veli Rat. Constructed in 1849, it rises to 36 metres in height, with a lighthouse keeper’s cottage nestled at its base still inhabited by an active keeper. Climb to the top for majestic views across the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding coastline.

Getting around

There are regular ferries connecting the villages of Brbinj and Božava on Dugi Otok to Zadar. Zadar Airport is 20 minutes’ drive from the city centre and has seasonal flights to destinations across Europe. Buses travel along the length of the island, although renting a car or scooter gives you greater freedom to explore. Cycling is a popular way of exploring Dugi Otok.
