Backed by the Dolomites’ soaring peaks, Fassa Valley is a spectacular region in north-east Italy that’s famed as a hiking and skiing destination. It’s dotted with charming villages that boast magnificent mountain views and is home to the only Ladin-speaking community in Trentino.
If you’re visiting in the winter months, you can hit the ski slopes of the Sellaronda or attend the Marcialonga, an annual cross-country skiing race that attracts some of Europe’s best. In the warmer months, cyclists can challenge themselves on the Tour of the 4 Passes, which boasts breathtaking panoramas across the valley.
For a dose of culture, visit Museo Ladin de Fascia in the village of Vigo di Fassa, which explores the artistic, farming and family life of the region. At the head of the valley are the remains of trenches and fortifications constructed by Austro-Hungarian troops during World War I.
Getting there
Bolzano - Dolomiti Airport is 1.5 hours’ drive from the Fassa Valley while Innsbruck Airport is 2.5 hours away. Regular trains stop at Bolzano and Trento railway stations, with buses connecting to Fassa Valley. Several cable cars access the area’s ski slopes.
