Things to do in Ålesund
Alesund boasts some of the best-preserved examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Europe, with many of the buildings constructed after a fire destroyed much of the city in 1904. The Jugendstil Senteret museum occupies a beautifully restored Art Nouveau pharmacy and charts the evolution of the architectural movement in Alesund.
More than 400 steps lead up to the summit of Aksla Hill to Kniven Viewpoint. At the top, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views over the city and its brightly-painted houses, as well as the surrounding islands and mountains.
Home to one of the biggest fishing fleets in Norway, Alesund is a dream destination for seafood lovers. Cod is a staple, with most restaurants offering their own version of the local delicacy. You’ll also see haddock, mackerel, halibut, pollack and other cold-water species on the menu.
Godøy is one of several offshore islands linked to the mainland via bridges. The island showcases the rugged natural beauty of Norway and is laced with scenic walking trails. Climb to the top of Alnes Lighthouse for sweeping views over the island and the Atlantic Ocean, then visit the old lighthouse keeper’s cottage that has been reimagined as a cosy café.
Geiranger Fjord stretches for more than 15 kilometres and is surrounded by snow-capped peaks. As you cruise through the UNESCO-protected fjord, you’ll see waterfalls cascading down the forested cliffsides. Alesund is also a launchpad for Trollstigen, one of the most popular scenic mountain drives in Norway.
Getting around Ålesund
Alesund is pedestrian-friendly while local buses are a fast and easy way to get around. Alesund Airport on Vigra Island is a 20-minute drive from the city centre. Trains run between Alesund and Oslo in around eight hours.
