About Beigan Township

Beigan Island combines beautiful coastal scenery with a fascinating historical narrative. It’s one of the largest and most captivating islands in the Matsu archipelago and is dotted with traditional stone fishing villages. Things to do in Beigan Township

Beigan Island has been inhabited for centuries and is dotted with beautifully preserved stone villages like Qinbi. Granite houses cascade down the cliffside to a sandy bay. Many have been reimagined as atmospheric cafes and guesthouses. Built around a rocky harbour, Qiaozi Village is another charm-soaked destination. You’ll love getting lost in the winding passageways and hidden staircases.

The Matsu Islands played an important role in protecting Taiwan from communist invasion in the 1950s. It also served as a refuge for Republic of China leaders during the Chinese Civil War. Beigan is peppered with sea forts and defensive tunnels that recall the island’s past as a military stronghold.

Visit Beigan Island in April and June for a chance to see the ocean light up with bioluminescent “blue tear” algae. After-dark boat tours are a great way to view the natural phenomenon. It’s also possible to see the shimmering blue microbes from the beaches surrounding Beigan Island.

Boats depart from Qiaozi Harbour and whisk you to Daqiu Island in just five minutes. A walking trail circumnavigates the small, uninhabited island and showcases the pristine coastline. The island is home to a herd of friendly Formosan sika deer.
