About Cabrera

Perched at the western end of Scottish Bay, Cabrera is a small dairy and meat-producing town on the Dominican Republic’s north coast. It was originally known as “Tres Amarras” before being renamed in honour of General José Cabrera, a hero of the Dominican War of Restoration.

Things to do in Cabrera

In the far north of Cabrera is Playa el Puerto, a small strip of sand where fishing boats rest during the day. For sweeping views across the North Atlantic Ocean, head to the Malecon de Cabrera, where you’ll find giant letters spelling out the town’s name. Here there are a handful of waterfront restaurants, including Miramar and Restaurante La Rotonda.

Hidden just inland is the Saltadero de los Muchachos, a picturesque cascade that tumbles into a natural pool surrounded by a forested grove. Join the locals who come to picnic nearby and enjoy a refreshing swim. Alternatively, you can climb the wooden staircase that leads to the top of the falls and dive into the water below.

A short drive south of Cabrera is the Dudu Lagoon, where turquoise waters are framed by steep cliffs draped in vegetation. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can dive between two lagoons and boasts a zip line for flying into the water. The surrounding landscape is home to several caves that are decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and pre-Columbian art.

Getting around Cabrera

Cabrera is around 35 minutes’ drive from Nagua and three hours from Santiago De Los Caballeros. Cibao International Airport is just under three hours away and has flights to destinations across the Caribbean and the United States. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting to Cabrera and the town is small enough to explore on foot.
