About Caldas de Reis

Caldas de Reis is a spa town set on the banks of the Umia River. The town is famous for its mineral-rich hot springs, which are said to have therapeutic and healing properties. The Camino de Santiago passes through the town and makes it popular with walkers travelling along the long-distance trail.

Locals have been soaking in the mineral-rich waters of Caldas de Reis for hundreds of years. High concentrations of minerals such as sulphur, sodium, bicarbonate, lithium, nitrogen and fluoride will soothe your muscles and leave your skin feeling silky soft. The thermal springs are a luxurious 42 degrees Celcius to 48 degrees Celcius throughout the year.

In the town centre, you’ll find several spa complexes where you can soak in mineral-rich baths. The best establishments occupy beautifully restored historic buildings and treat you to fantastic views over the river. Some elevate the experience with outdoor hot tubs, heated swimming pools and hydro-massage baths.

The historic village centre is filled with centuries-old Romanesque architecture. Many of the buildings have been reimagined as atmospheric cafes, wine bars and taverns where you can enjoy traditional dishes from the Galicia region. Try specialties like steamed mussels, fried “padron” peppers and boiled octopus drizzled with olive oil and dusted with smoked paprika. Pair your meal with a glass of Galician wine.

Carballeira de Caldas de Reis overlooks the river and is a lovely spot to stretch your legs and enjoy a picnic. Just out of town is Cascada de Segade, a series of tumbling waterfalls that flow down the Umia River. Work up a sweat before cooling off in the crystalline pools.
