Packed with cultural sights in the countryside of East Flanders, Deinze makes for a popular day trip from nearby Ghent. It retains many historic buildings, from a 16th-century castle to a revered church, which has lived through the city’s storied past that includes witches, saints and famous painters.
The Museum of Deinze and the Leie River is a good place to start, set within a charming white building on the river bank. It showcases the historical and folkloric heritage of the town, including its rich industrial roots, together with works by local artists Van den Bergh, De Smet and Raveel.
Stroll north to the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, a 14th-century church that exhibits the distinct Flemish architectural style of Schelde Gothic. The interior is adorned with religious statues, reliefs and stained-glass windows and houses an impressive bell carillon.
Travelling with kids? Take the time to visit the 30-hectare park of De Brielmeersen on the southern edge of Deinze. It’s home to a children’s playground and farm animals to pet, as well as trails that meander through the forest and ponds where resident storks wade in the shallows.
One of the most impressive landmarks in Deinze is Ooidonk Castle, which lies near the village of Bachte-Maria-Leerne to the north-east of the town. This moated, medieval castle dates to the 12th century and its interior features exquisite period furnishings and decor.
Deinze is a 15-minute train journey south-west of Ghent and around one hour from Brussels and its international airport. The town is small and pleasant to walk around, with bicycles for rent if you want to explore the surrounding countryside.
