About Füzesgyarmat

Located in Hungary’s Southern Great Plain region, Füzesgyarmat is a small town near the banks of the Barcău River. It’s home to a family-friendly wildlife park and serves as a gateway for exploring the Bihar Plain and the wildlife-filled steppe of Hortobágyi National Park.

Things to do in Füzesgyarmat

A short drive east of Füzesgyarmat is the Bihar Plain Landscape Protection Area, which was established in 1998 by the Hungarian Nature Conservation. It provides habitat for herds of deer and European pond terrapins, as well as ospreys, white-tailed eagles and red-footed falcons. Stretch your legs on one of the trails that wind through its fields and marshes while enjoying the expansive views across the plains.

Travelling with kids? Don’t miss a visit to the Füzesgyarmat Zoo and Game Farm, which is located on the outskirts of town. It’s home to nearly 100 different species, including native Hungarian animals and domesticated breeds. Watch the beekeeping demonstration to taste the local honey or test your milking skills before embarking on a horse and carriage ride.

To the north of Füzesgyarmat sprawls Hortobágyi National Park, an 800-square-metre protected area that is of cultural significance. Its grassy plains provide habitat for Hungarian grey cattle, water buffalo and racka sheep, which are instantly recognisable due to their spiral-shaped horns. An icon of the park is the Nine-arched Bridge, a 167-metre-long stone landmark built between 1827 and 1833.
