Where to stay in Gelsenkirchen

About Gelsenkirchen

Gelsenkirchen is a city in the North Rhine-Westphalia state, in the heart of Germany’s Ruhr region, located near the cities of Cologne and Dusseldorf. The city was the most important coal mining town in Europe in the 20th century and named the "city of a thousand fires" because of the sight of its flaring mine gas flames.

The industry saw a decline after World War II, but the old refineries were creatively redesigned into concert halls, ice skating rinks, and parks while, at the same time, keeping their distinctive industrial image. These include the “Nordsternpark” with gardens, ponds, a rock climbing area, playground, and an open-air theatre. Two city parks, the “Revierpark” and “Stadtgarten” offer similar attractions. A rather unusual Gelsenkirchen landmark, located on Leithestrasse is the “Halde Rheinelbe,” stands an artificial mound at 100 metres high, its contents made up of excavated materials from the former Rheinelbe mine that was closed in 1928. It has been developed into a recreational area and is popular with dirt bike, downhill, and free-bike riders. In addition to these amusing attractions, Gelsenkirchen's interactive “Zoom Erlebniswelt” is a zoo with a difference, where three sections, Africa, Asia, and Alaska, provides a natural atmosphere for the animals.

Gelsenkirchen is serviced by two major airports. Dusseldorf International Airport is located 48 kilometres away, and Cologne-Bonn Airport lies 96 kilometres away, with train stations to Gelsenkirchen available at both airports. A bus and streetcar service is a popular form of public transport in the city. Gelsenkirchen can also be reached using the Autobahn, as well as the Bundesstrasse.

Gelsenkirchen first appears in the records in 1150. It remained a small village until the 19th century, when the Industrial Revolution led to the development of the whole area. In 1840 when coal mining began there were 6,000 inhabitants living in Gelsenkirchen, and by 1900, the population had risen to 138,000. In keeping with its industrial roots, it is today home to Germany’s largest solar power plant.
