Home to 647 opulent rooms, Hamburger Rathaus is an immense city hall in the heart of Hamburg’s Altstadt quarter. It’s set within a striking sandstone building that was constructed during the late-19th century and serves as the seat of local government today.
Admire the ornate facade of the Hamburger Rathaus, which is decorated with statues of past emperors, then wander through the Neo-Renaissance grounds featuring a fountain dedicated to the Greek goddess of health, Hygieia. Step between the monumental iron gates into the Main Hall to browse the classical portraits and admire the stunning painted ceiling of the Imperial Hall.
Parliamentary meetings are held in the Debating Room once a week, while concerts are often showcased in the beautifully decorated Grand Lobby. Getting there
The Hamburger Rathaus is located in the centre of Hamburg and adjacent to the Rathaus subway station. Buses stop outside the city hall, while Hamburg Airport is around 20 minutes’ drive north.
