About Henderson

One of the major suburbs of Auckland, Henderson is located 13 kilometres west of the city centre. This vibrant suburb has a railway station for easy access, plus a large shopping mall and theatre complex. Henderson is close to picturesque TeAtatu Peninsula and several natural scenic reserves.

The busy suburb is home to a variety of shopping outlets, fine dining restaurants, cafes and scenic areas. Begin an exploration with a visit to Crystal Mountain, and enjoy a fun, family day out with the largest selection of crystals and minerals in the world. The park is home to the Crystal Mine Museum, an animal park with rides and life size dinosaurs. Alternatively, spend a day at Westfield WestCity shopping centre with large-scale stores, restaurants and a range of facilities. Those preferring a more relaxing day can head to West Wave Pool and Leisure Centre. The complex was purposely built for the Commonwealth Games in 1990 and features hydro slides, wave pools, spas and saunas. It’s the ideal way to keep everyone in the travelling party occupied. Visitors who prefer basking in the great outdoors can venture to the picturesque viewing point of TeAtatu Peninsula. Located at the western end of Waitemata Harbour and close to Henderson Creek, it offers wonderful walkways and some of the best views of Auckland. Another interesting option is to spend a day at the Corban Estate Arts Centre. The centre runs artist studio visits, historic tours and exhibitions throughout the year. Dining out in Henderson is an exciting experience, there are culinary options to suit all tastes and budgets. Travellers can choose from a variety of cafes, barbeque dinners, Asian and International restaurants.

The bustling suburb of Henderson is easy to reach from central Auckland via bus or train. The town’s railway station is located near Westfield WestCity Shopping Mall and the town centre. Henderson itself is compact and simple to navigate both on foot or by bicycle.

The suburb was named after Thomas Henderson, an early colonial settler who started a timber mill in the area in the mid-1800’s. Today, this popular suburb is home to many commuters, major retail complexes, wine estates and with Auckland city centre within easy reach, it makes for an ideal retreat outside the city.
