About Jhelum

Jhelum is a colourful blend of Pakistani and Punjabi culture. The city is set on the banks of the Jhelum River and is a great base for exploring the north. Get lost in the bustling streets and markets of the city centre and venture out of town to discover an ancient fort, visit centuries-old temples and tour one of the largest salt mines in the world.

A short drive from the city centre is Rohtas Fort, a magnificent 16th-century stronghold constructed during the reign of Sher Shah Suri. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is an incredible example of early Muslim architecture. Gaze up at the soaring outer walls and watch your step as you walk along the crumbling ramparts.

Tours of the Khewra Salt Mine take you behind-the-scenes of the enormous mine. It’s one of the largest and oldest salt mines in the world and is famous for its coveted pink Himalayan salt. A railway takes you into the cathedral-like caverns where you can admire sculptures made from shimmering salt bricks.

Escape the city and spend the day at Mangla Dam. Enjoy a relaxing picnic on the grassy foreshore or stretch your legs on the waterside trails. Rowboats and water sports equipment can be rented from the shoreline.

The Ancient Temples of Tilla Jogian have been sacred to local Hindis for more than 2,000 years. The complex is perched on the summit of a rugged peak and is surrounded by ancient pine and olive trees.
