Located in Italy's Tuscany region, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is world-famous for its gravity-defying tilt. The top-heavy bell tower leans roughly five degrees to the north thanks to the soft foundations laid in 1172.
Marvel at the medieval masterpiece from all angles before climbing up the internal staircase to take in the views of the Square of Miracles from the top. The marble tower, which according to all calculations should have fallen centuries ago, weighs an astounding 14,700 metric tons and stands 56 meters tall.
Don’t leave without visiting the Cathedral of Pisa, an impressive example of Romanesque architecture with a curious Islamic dome. After working up an appetite, head to Via Santa Maria, a busy thoroughfare dotted with pizzerias and traditional trattorias where you can try local specialties, including Panzanella.
Getting there
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is 1.5 hours' drive from Florence and roughly 2.5 hours’ drive from Genoa. Pisa International Airport is a 45-minute bus ride away. Trains arrive regularly at Pisa Centrale Station, with direct buses to the Square of Miracle.
