Where to stay in Lyngdal

About Lyngdal

Located at the far end of the Rosfjord, Lyngdal is a bustling wood processing and agricultural town in Southern Norway. It’s a popular holiday destination due to its sandy beaches and family-friendly waterpark. It’s also on the doorstep of a former Viking assembly and one of Norway’s top salmon fishing rivers.

Things to do

One of Lyngdal’s most unique attractions is its salmon staircase, which forms part of the Nasjonalt Villakssenter - Kvåsfossen. The concrete steps were built into a 220-metre-long tunnel at the Kvås Waterfall, enabling the salmon to swim up the river and lay their eggs. Peer through the glass windows to watch the salmon in action while learning about their life cycle in the rivers of Norway.

Discover how the Vikings once lived at the Tingvatn Fornminnepark, which occupies an ancient thing (assembly) where seafaring Norse people once gathered. In addition to changing exhibitions and traditional craft demonstrations, a highlight of the museum is a replica of the Snartemosverdet Viking sword that was discovered at a nearby farm.

Travelling with kids? Spend a day at Sørlandsbadet, a family-friendly water park that features shallow wading pools, diving boards and a wave pool with a current canal. You can brave one of the two water slides or relax in the whirlpools, one of which boasts a sun terrace overlooking the Rosfjord. Once you’ve built up an appetite, you can grab healthy snacks and meals from the on-site cafe.

Getting around

Lyngdal is around 1.5 hours’ drive from Kristiansund and Kristiansand Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe. Buses connect Lyngdal to towns and villages across Agder while the town centre is compact enough to explore on foot.
