About Macau

While Macau is famous for its world-class casinos, venturing beyond the slot machines rewards visitors with a rich history, culture and a tantalising local food scene. Get lost in colourful fishing villages, peer into centuries-old churches and discover the city’s rich Portuguese heritage.

Things to do in Macau

Macau lives up to its reputation as the “Vegas of China”, with dozens of neon-lit casinos to discover. Most are located on Cotai, a glamourous pocket of the Macau Peninsula where you’ll find iconic establishments like The Parisian, The Venetian and MGM Cotai. Gaze up at a half-scale replica of the Eiffel Tower, make a splash in the indoor water park and dress up for a night of dazzling live entertainment.

Macau was ruled by the Portuguese for more than three centuries and has retained much of its European charm. Strolling around the UNESCO World Heritage city, you’ll see handsome colonial architecture, colourful mosaic tiles and bakeries selling mouth-watering Portuguese egg tarts.

Venture south and you’ll find the pocket-sized island of Taipa. You can wander around the picturesque streets and admire the beautifully restored Macanese houses. Nearby, the laid-back island of Coloane is anchored by a charming village laced with cobbled alleyways.

Food is a highlight in most Asian countries and Macau doesn’t disappoint. Save your appetite for crispy pork buns, spicy chicken curry and “minchi” ground beef stir fry served with diced potatoes, onions and soy sauce. For dessert, indulge in “serradura” pudding made with whipped cream and crushed biscuits.

From Baroque gems to Jesuit masterpieces, Macau is dotted with beautiful historic buildings. The Ruins of the Church of St Paul date back to the 17th century and feature evocative stone carvings and statues. Head up to Guia Fortress & Chapel to explore the ancient stronghold and for sweeping views over the city.

Getting around Macau

Much of Macau is easy to get around on foot while metered taxis are a good way to get from A to B. You can also ride local buses or hail a pedicab tricycle. Flights arrive at Macau International Airport on the island of Taipa.
