Where to stay in Monte Isola

About Monte Isola

The serene car-free island of Monte Isola is one of Italy's great getaway destinations. Located in Lake Iseo, it's the largest island in any of Italy's lakes. Time seems to have stood still here, with the island's villages maintaining their ancient style and ambience. With a lack of noisy engines, it is a magical destination that attracts people for the day, but also for overnight stays.

A thickly-wooded mountain divides the island into two halves. The eastern side is steep and hard to penetrate, a place of remote hiking trails and very few people. The western slopes are gentler and dappled with a mix of olive groves and vineyards. A handful of traditional villages are located here, with most of the island's population centred on the enchanting settlements of Siviano, Carvano and Peschiera Maraglio. Porto Village has a sublime 18th century baroque church while the fortress at Martinengo and cafe terraces of Sensole are also popular attractions.

Ferries to the island leave from Iseo and Sulzano on the shores of Lake Iseo and arrive at the docks in the north-west of the island. Upon arrival, everyone must use their feet or a bicycle to get around. The island is only three kilometres wide yet rises to 600 metres above the lake. The western side has enchanting trails but climbing to the island's peak or exploring the East can be challenging on the legs. Note that bicycles are not permitted on the ferry and must be rented upon arrival at shops in Carzano, Sensole, or Peschiera.

Travelling around Monte Isola is a delight and showcases the island's history. The route moves uphill from the baroque villas of Porto and Carvano, past the baroque church of Novale, then through the medieval lanes of Cure. The journey ends at the 16th century shrine, Santuario Madonna della Ceriola, standing on the summit of the island.
