About Nowon-gu

Nestled beneath the peaks of Suraksan and Bukhansan, Nowon-gu is a residential district in Seoul’s north-east. It has the highest population density in the South Korean capital and has been referred to as an “educational district” due to its large number of schools and universities. Nowon-gu is home to the northern branch of the Seoul Museum of Art and one of the UNESCO-listed Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.

Things to do in Nowon-gu

Art enthusiasts shouldn’t miss a visit to the Seoul Museum of Art (North), which occupies a strikingly designed modern building adjacent to Santaek-ro park. In addition to an outdoor sculpture garden, the museum hosts regularly changing contemporary exhibitions and family-friendly art programs. After browsing the maze-shaped galleries, you can stop by the art library or grab a coffee at the on-site cafe.

East of Nowon-gu is the Taereung Royal Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses the burial mound of Queen Munjeong. Step beneath the red gate that leads to the complex’s two stone paths, one of which is designated for the Joseon Dynasty queen. While she was an influential supporter of Buddhism, Queen Munjeong was also known for murdering her stepson to make her natal son king.

You can stretch your legs on the walking trail that leads through Gyeongchun Line Forest Park, which was established on a disused railway line. It features several original bridges that have been lovingly restored, as well as artwork illustrating the cultural heritage of the Gyeongchun Railway.

Getting around Nowon-gu

Nowon-gu is around 45 minutes by train from Seoul Station and around an hour from Incheon International Airport. It’s connected to the South Korean capital along several lines of the Seoul Subway and buses travel throughout Nowon-gu.
