Things to do in Oxfordshire

Opulent palaces, world-renowned colleges and scenic railways - Oxfordshire is a must-visit destination on the doorstep of London.

Explore the colleges of Oxford. Nicknamed the “City of Dreaming Spires”, Oxford’s 38 university colleges are renowned for their magnificent architecture. Marvel at the Bodleian, one of the oldest libraries in Europe, then tour the historic Oxford Castle & Prison. Afterwards, stroll between the elegant glasshouses of the Oxford Botanic Garden.

Visit the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Constructed in the early 18th century as a seat for the Dukes of Marlborough, Blenheim Palace is a UNESCO-listed country house named after the 1704 Battle of Blenheim. Admire its English Baroque architecture and step inside to tour its gilded staterooms, then follow in Churchill’s footsteps through the formal gardens.

Ride the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway. Following the foot of the Chilterns escarpment, this heritage railway offers a scenic journey through the rural landscapes of southern Oxfordshire. In addition to its regular journeys, the railway also hosts themed events that include “Spirit of the 40s” days, gin and cheese tasting trips and rides with Santa Claus.

Learn about Henley-on-Thames’ rowing culture. Considered one of the most beautiful towns in England, Henley-on-Thames is a world-renowned centre for rowing and plays host to the Henley Royal Regatta each summer. You can learn about the town’s long associations with the sport at the River and Rowing Museum or just watch all the comings and goings on the waterway from the scenic Mill & Marsh Meadows.

Getting around Oxfordshire

London Heathrow Airport and Birmingham Airport are both less than an hour’s drive from Oxfordshire while the town of Oxford is connected to London and Birmingham by regular trains. Buses travel from Oxford to each of the major towns in the county and the centre of Oxford is compact enough to explore on foot.
