Relax among the greenery of Russell Square, a charming park in the heart of Bloomsbury opposite the British Museum. Bound by Georgian townhouses, the Heritage-listed gardens were built in 1806 for the Duke of Bedford, a statue of whom still stands in the center of the square.
Stroll along the walkways and admire the manicured gardens lined with old oak and elm trees. Sherlock Holmes fans may recognize the square from a few memorable scenes in the hit BBC TV series “Sherlock” and can even join a private Sherlock Holmes walking tour to visit the legendary detective’s famous fictional address.
Enjoy coffee and cake on the patio at the park’s popular outdoor cafe, Caffe Tropea, or pack a picnic for a relaxed lunch on the manicured lawn. It’s the perfect place to unwind after visiting the British Museum or testing out your puzzle-solving skills at nearby Agent November.
Getting there
Russell Square is about two minutes’ walk from Russell Square Tube Station via Bernard Street. Buses regularly stop on the north and south borders of the park and paid parking spaces are available at Bloomsbury Square and Brunswick Square.
