Overlooking the Sotla River, Podčetrtek is a peaceful town on Slovenia’s eastern border with Croatia. It’s home to one of the country’s oldest castles and a therapeutic spa while being on the doorstep of scenic meadows, Baroque churches and alpine trails in Kozjansko Regional Park.
Podčetrteks's most famous architectural landmark is its centuries-old castle, which was first recorded in writing in 1361. Much of its current structure dates from the 17th century and, although abandoned, it remains an imposing feature on the town’s skyline. Also of note is the whitewashed Church of Saint Lawrence, which is renowned for its frescoed ceiling.
If you’re after rest and relaxation, head to the Terme Olimia, a wellness centre where you’ll find therapeutic pools, jacuzzis and a family-friendly waterpark. In the nearby village of Olimje is a striking 16th-century castle, which was later converted into a monastery. Olimje Castle now houses a notable herbal apothecary.
Getting there
Podčetrtek is around 40 minutes’ drive from Celje and 1.5 hours from Ljubljana. Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport is just under two hours away and has flights to destinations across Europe. Trains connect to the Podčetrtek railway station and buses travel throughout the municipality.
