Delve into Poltava’s history at The Poltava Battle History Museum, home to portraits of Ukrainian Hetmans, medals and personal items of Peter I. You can also study the diorama showing the last minutes of the Great Battle. Step on the former battlefield to gain insight into the history of the Poltava wars.

Admire the gleaming white bell tower at Uspensky Cathedral, erected in 1801, and marvel at the ornate gold details. Don’t miss seeing the colorful exterior of the 18th-century Spassky Church, which is actually an outer shell protecting an older wooden church inside.

Looking for some retail therapy? Browse the shops at Gold City Underground Shopping Center, which also features a variety of restaurants, ice-cream parlors and beauty salons. If you want to pick up some souvenirs, such as handicrafts and apparel, browse the stalls at the Central Bazaar.

Take a break in October Park, where scenic paths lead to two picturesque lakes and the grassy fields are often filled with locals playing the sport. You can see the famous Poltava Statue of Shevchenko in Petrovsky Park, a monument dedicated to the Ukrainian poet, artist and independence leader.

Getting around

You can access Poltava by train, bus or car from nearby cities, while Poltava Airport sits seven kilometers away. You can walk around the center of town but will need to use a bus, trolley or taxi to venture further.
