About Salisbury, NC

Serving as the seat of Rowan County, Salisbury is one of the oldest continuously populated colonial towns in North Carolina. It was established in the mid-18th century at the intersection of Native American trade routes and became an important economic hub along the Great Wagon Road. Many of its most impressive buildings were built by wealthy cotton planters and merchants in the post-Civil War years.

Things to do in Salisbury

For a dose of local history, head to the Rowan Museum, which occupies a 19th-century courthouse on the main street of Salisbury. It’s considered a fine example of antebellum architecture, with a colossal Doric portico dominating its facade. In addition to its exhibits and recreated courtroom, the museum manages the Georgian-style Old Stone House from 1766.

One of Salisbury’s most popular recreational areas is Bell Tower Green, where you’ll find a natural play area for kids and a summer splash pad. It’s named after the 1892-built bell tower that dominates the site and regularly hosts community events and festivities. Coincide your visit with a musical performance in the amphitheatre, which can be enjoyed from the grassy expanse of the Circular Lawn.

If you’re interested in life in Salisbury during the Civil War, head to Dr. Joseph Hall House, a heritage-listed residence originally constructed in the 1820s as classrooms for the Salisbury Female Academy. Join a guided tour to explore its period-furnished interior, which combines elements of Federal, Greek Revival and late Victorian styles.
