About Salwa

Overlooking the Persian Gulf, Salwa is a residential area in the south-east of Kuwait City that is popular with expat residents. It’s home to English-language schools, international embassies and children’s nurseries and sits on the doorstep of outstanding museums and the lavish Bayan Palace.

Things to do in Salwa

If you’re interested in calligraphy, don’t miss a visit to the Tareq Rajab Museum, where around 10,000 manuscripts, ceramics and carvings are exhibited. In addition to pottery vessels dating from pre-Islamic times, the museum boasts a rare collection of gold jewellery from across the Middle East. A highlight of the museum is its collection of Qur’ans from throughout the Islamic world.

In nearby Salmiya is the Scientific Center of Kuwait, a sail-shaped building housing one of the largest aquariums in the Middle East, as well as several historic fishing dhows. Come face-to-face with giant spider crabs and jellyfish, get hands-on conducting science experiments, then settle in for a 3D documentary in the IMAX theatre. Kids particularly love the outdoor exhibit where they can test their strength while pulling and lifting a car.

Salwa is a short drive from Bayan Palace, the main residence of the Emir of Kuwait and an international conference centre. In addition to ornate fountains and a gold-topped mosque, the complex features a botanical garden where both native and exotic species are cultivated. Wander through the six themed gardens and explore the climate-controlled glasshouses, which offer a cool respite from the outdoor heat.

Getting around Salwa

Salwa is around 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Kuwait City and around the same distance from Kuwait International Airport. Buses connect Salwa to destinations across the city while taxis are the most convenient way of getting around the area.
