Perched on the south-west shore of Lake Atitlan, San Pedro La Laguna is a bustling Guatemalan town that is a popular hub for learning Spanish. It has long been inhabited by the Tz’utujil people and has a rich history of textile weaving while it’s also a base for hikers accessing the nearby volcanic peaks.

Things to do in San Pedro La Laguna

Begin your visit at the Tzunan’Ya Museum, which offers a fascinating insight into the formation of Lake Atitlan and the history of the Tz’utujil people. See old photos of San Pedro La Laguna in days gone by and watch a short video taken in the town back in 1943. A highlight is having your “nahual” (animal counterpart) interpreted based on your date of birth according to the Maya calendar.

Also not to miss is the Teixchel Weaving Association, a Tz’utujil-run women’s collective that makes and sells fair-trade textiles. You can learn about the process of textile weaving or get hands-on during a class, then browse the beautiful garments available in the on-site store.
