About Soledad

Sprawling on the west bank of the Magdalena River, Soledad is a lively city that forms part of Barranquilla’s urban sprawl. It was founded in 1640 and has evolved into an important commercial and manufacturing hub, with large shopping malls, leafy parks and historic churches among its attractions.

Things to do in Soledad

In the heart of the municipality is Plaza Soledad, a tree-lined square watched over by the whitewashed Iglesia San Antonio de Padua. Originally established in the late 16th century, it is one of the oldest colonial churches in the Atlantico department. Step inside to admire the gilded altar and the 17th-century mural depicting the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

For a retail fix, head to the multi-storey Gran Plaza Del Sol Mall, where you'll find stores selling the latest fashions, accessories and sporting goods. In addition to plenty of fast-food eateries, there is a multi-screen cinema complex that showcases all of the latest international blockbusters. The Gran Plaza Del Sol Mall lies adjacent to Parque Muvdi with its recreational courts and family-friendly splash park.

On the edge of Soledad is Roberto Melendez Metropolitan Stadium, which is the home ground of the Primera A soccer team, Atletico Junior. It has the capacity to seat more than 46,000 fans, making it the largest stadium in Colombia. Named after the beloved Colombian footballer, Roberto Melendez, it also hosts home games of the Colombian national team.

Getting around Soledad

Soledad is around 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of Barranquilla and 20 minutes from Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport, which has flights to destinations across the Americas. Regular buses connect to Soledad and travel throughout the municipality, connecting most of its attractions. Taxis are also readily available for getting around.
