About Täby

With an accessible location to the city centre and Arlanda Airport, Täby is a popular patch of suburbia to the north of Stockholm. Its picturesque lakes, oceanfront location and forests make it an alluring place to live, as well as being home to Sweden’s largest indoors shopping mall at Täby Centrum.

Täby is located within Stockholm County and divided into numerous residential districts, including Ella Gård, Gribbylund, Näsbypark, Skarpäng, and Viggbyholm. Many of the buildings originated as summer houses built between the 1950s and 1970s, later being transformed into the more permanent housing during the building boom of the 1980s and 90s. There’s both lakeside and ocean beaches for swimming within the area and plenty of walking trails, including the 7-kilometre Värtan’s Walk. A picturesque way to explore Täby, the Värtan’s Walk takes in a mix of coastal areas, scenic forests and the Näsby palace, with lots of historical and cultural information signposted along the route.

Täby Centrum station is the main transport hub in the area, located alongside the shopping mall. Both trains and buses service Täby and its surrounds, with the Roslagsbanan connecting with Östra Station by rail and plenty of buses that whisk commuters into Stockholm.

Inhabited since the Bronze Age, it was during the Viking Age that Täby developed into an important agricultural area, with its name found carved into the Jarlabanke Runestones near the Täby Church and believed to reference it as a village surrounded by roads. Täby's first commercial shop only opened in 1885, the same year that the Roslagsbanan railroad opened, and the improved connections with Stockholm saw it emerge as a popular getaway destination for locals.
