About Taihape

Nicknamed the “Gumboot Capital of New Zealand”, Taihape is a small rural town in the heart of the North Island. It’s on the doorstep of the National Army Museum and the white-water rapids of the Rangitikei River and offers easy access to an ancient Maori route.

Things to do in Taihape

Learn about the military campaigns involving New Zealand’s forces at the National Army Museum in the nearby town of Waiorua. Browse the old weaponry, uniforms and photographs, then honour those who sacrificed their lives at the Tears On Greenstone memorial.

Tackle the exhilarating rapids along the Rangitikei River during a half or full-day white-water rafting trip. Want a longer adventure? Immerse yourself in the wilderness during a multi-day rafting trip that involves being helicoptered in and camping overnight on remote beaches.
