About Tapolca

Just a stone’s throw from Lake Balaton’s shores, Tapolca is a charming town whose name translates from Hungarian to “high place”. Centred around a scenic pond, the town is famed for its subterranean cave system. It also offers easy access to Balaton Uplands National Park.

Things to do in Tapolca

A highlight of visiting Tapolca is exploring the Lake Cave, a three-kilometre-long cave system that can be navigated independently or as part of a guided tour. Begin by watching the short video that explains the geological origins of the cave and marvel at some of its most impressive sights in 3D. You can then rent a small boat to see its subterranean formations with your own eyes.

Want to learn about the people and events that have shaped Tapolca? Pay a visit to the City Museum, which occupies a former school. The City Museum is a short stroll from Malom-tó, Tapolca’s central pond that features the “Four Seasons” sculpture by László Marton.

Dominating the town’s skyline is the Tapolcai Nagyboldogasszony, a Catholic church originally built in the 13th century. It was completed in a Gothic style in the 14th century and was rebuilt in 1756 following Hungary’s Ottoman invasion. Today it provides a peaceful place of worship for Tapolca’s citizens and hosts regular concerts.
