Where to stay in Uzhhorod

About Uzhhorod

Established as a 9th-century Slav fortress town, Uzhgorod clusters around a hilltop castle on the edge of Ukraine’s western border. It’s home to a fascinating folk architecture museum and offers easy access to the Nevytske Castle’s atmospheric ruins.

Things to do

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the city, Uzhgorod Castle is a Hungarian-built fortress that once housed the regents of the Habsburgs. Admire its diverse range of architectural styles dating from the 13th to 18th centuries, then explore the traditional clothing, musical instruments and local artworks at the castle’s Museum of Regional History.

Don’t miss the semi-ruined Nevytske Castle between the villages of Nevytske and Kamianytsia. Originally built in the 13th century to control the Transcarpathian route over the Uzhok Pass, its setting atop a wooded promontory affords magnificent views over the valley and villages below.

If you’re interested in the cultural heritage of the region, visit the open-air Museum of Folk Architecture and Life. It features around 30 traditional structures from villages across Zakarpattia Oblast, including the 16th-century onion-domed church of St. Michael’s.

Travelling with kids? Spend a day in the leafy surrounds of Bozdos'kyi Park. Stroll along one of the many walking trails or enjoy a picnic on the grassy lawns while the kids let loose on the play equipment.

Getting around

Uzhgorod International Airport lies a five-minute drive away and has regular flights to Kiev, which is also connected via a 12-hour train journey. Taxis and marshrutka minibuses travel throughout Uzhgorod.
