See the old city of Algiers, officially known as the Casbah, to discover 17th-century buildings part of the UNESCO-listed city centre. Admire the architectural beauty of the Ketchaoua Mosque and its Moorish and Byzantine architecture, then explore the Dar Aziza palace and its pleasant courtyard, outdoor terraces and grand staircase.
Walk to the north side of the city to find the stunning Notre Dame d’Afrique, a Catholic basilica built in the 1800s. Featuring a Neo-Byzantine style, it’s considered to be the counterpiece to the church of Notre-Dame de la Garden on the other side of the Mediterranean.
Shopping enthusiasts should visit Rue Didouche Mourad to discover the city’s most popular strips lined with boutique shops. Notable landmarks can be found along the tree-lined boulevard, including the Grande Post office, one of the most important institutions of the French colonial rule.
Escape the city’s heat with a day trip to one of the nearby seaside resorts, such as the small coastal town of Sidi Fredj, 30 kilometres from Algiers. Spend a day exploring its quaint fishing harbour and sandy beaches.
Getting around Algiers
The easiest way to get around Algiers is by taxi, while metro services are also available. Houari Boumediene Airport is 20 kilometres from the city centre. There are also ferry services that connect Algiers to Marseille, Nice and Palermo.
