About Jijel, Algeria

Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Jijel is a bustling resort town on the north coast of Algeria. It was originally settled by the Phoenicians and passed through the hands of various empires before being conquered by the Ottoman pirate Hayreddin Barbarossa in the 16th century. Today, Jijel is a major fishing port and an important centre for leather tanning.

Things to do in Jijel

In the centre of Jijel is the Kotama Museum, which is named after a tribe that occupied the region in the 9th century. Its exhibits detail the cultural heritage of Jijel and its natural wonders and showcase local handicrafts. Learn about the city’s tumultuous past under the Carthaginians, Byzantines and Umayyads before being taken by the French in 1664.

Stretching east of Jijel’s Centre Ville is Plage Kotama, a lively beach where you can swim in the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. It’s particularly popular with families due to its safe, shallow waters, with plenty of beach umbrellas and sun loungers available for rent.
