About Amble

Located where the River Coquet flows into the North Sea, Amble is a coastal town in Northumberland. It flourished in the 19th century when collieries were established in the region and the arrival of the railway made the town an important port for the export of coal.

Things to do in Amble

Enjoy a stroll around Amble Harbour Village, which comprises 15 retail pods occupied by eateries and craft stalls. Stop in at the Seafood Centre to purchase fresh fish caught off the Northumberland Coast and visit the Lobster Hatchery to see the efforts being made to boost the local population. Nearby are the colourful Amble Beach Huts On Little Shore, which can be rented for a memorable day on the coast.

A short drive north of Amble is Warkworth Castle, a ruined medieval fortification designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It is believed to date from the 12th century when it was constructed within a loop of the River Coquet and has been remodelled several times since. Grab an audio tour to explore its cross-shaped keep and well-preserved towers while enjoying the spectacular coastal views from the castle walls.

Stretching north of the River Coquet is Warkworth Beach, a wide expanse of golden sand that provides a setting for swimming, walking and beach games. Surfing lessons are available with the Northside Surf School while golfers can enjoy a round on the 18-hole course of the Warkworth Golf Club. The Northumberland Coastal Walk connects north to the village of Alnmouth where the River Aln meets the North Sea.
