About Ares, Galicia

Located where the Ferrol River meets the Atlantic Ocean, Ares is a laid-back town in the Galician province of A Coruña. It’s a popular holiday destination due to its peaceful beaches and it offers easy access to centuries-old monasteries and military ruins. Ares is particularly renowned for its annual Corpus Christi celebrations.

Things to do in Ares

Spend your days relaxing on Praia de Ares, a sweeping crescent of sand overlooking the protected waters of the Enseada de Ares. It’s backed by a breezy promenade dotted with sculptures and connects to a small boat ramp. Overlooking the beach are several eateries where you can dine throughout the day, including Corbalan, Avenida and Bar O’Gaitero.

A hiking trail connects east to Praia de Seselle, a quieter stretch of sand backed by grassy dunes. On the other side of the headland is Praia de Sabadelle, a peaceful cove that can be reached via a steep set of stairs. On the opposite side of Ares is Praia do Colado, a magnificent beach backed by a dramatic cliff.

A short drive north-west of Ares is the Monasterio de Santa Catalina de Montefaro, a beautiful monastery dating back to the 12th century. You can stroll through its small botanical garden and grab a bite to eat at the on-site cafe. Nearby is the Ruinas da Bateria do Faro, which was constructed in the 1930s to protect the Costa Artabra.

Getting around Ares

Ares is around 40 minutes’ drive from A Coruña and A Coruña Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe. Buses connect to Ares, although renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the area. The centre of Ares is compact enough to explore on foot.
