About Chilgok

With the Nakdong River flowing through its heart, Chilgok is a bustling transportation hub in North Gyeongsang Province. It has long been associated with South Korea’s military history as the site of the Cheonsaengsanseong Fortress, where Gwak Jae-Woo fought the Japanese in 1592. More recently, it was the location of the Nakdong River Battle during the Korean War.

Things to do in Chilgok

If you’re interested in the region’s wartime history, pay a visit to the Chilgok Patriots & Peace Memorial, which occupies a strikingly designed building near the banks of the Nakdong River. It is dedicated to the soldiers who seized victory here during the Korean War and exhibits artefacts from the 55-day battle. Also on display are miniature recreations of the conflict and memorials dedicated to those who lost their lives.

After your visit, you can pay your respects at the Hill 303 Korean War Memorial, which was built to commemorate the 41 United States Army personnel, who were killed here by North Korean troops on 17 August 1950. From the memorial, there are sweeping views across the Nakdong River and the urban landscapes of Chilgok.

For a nature fix, head to the Songjeong Recreational Forest, where you can go hiking, enjoy a dip in the swimming pool or learn about native species at the Seah Arboretum. Nearby is the Seven Valley Country Club, which boasts a challenging golf course framed by mature trees and with plenty of attractive water features.

Getting there

Chilgok is around 25 minutes by train from Daegu and one hour from Daegu International Airport, which has flights to destinations across Asia. Regular trains connect to the Waegwan railway station and buses travel throughout Chilgok, accessing most of its attractions. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the county.
