About Metung

Tucked away in Gippsland Lakes, Metung is a postcard-perfect village set on a narrow peninsula. It's part of Australia's largest inland network of waterways, so swimming, boating and fishing are top priorities. There are sweeping sandy beaches, scores of local art studios and plenty of friendly pelicans.

Things to do

From luxury yachts to pint-sized dinghies, Metung is a mecca for boat owners. Most make a beeline for Metung Marina, a short five-minute stroll from the town centre. If you don't own a boat, you can always sign up for a relaxing sunset cruise around the calm waters of Gippsland Lakes.

Metung offers fantastic fishing, especially off the Metung Boardwalk or one of the town's public jetties. The summer months are particularly bountiful, with the chance to reel in bream, tailor, flathead, King George whiting and prawns. If you're in search of mulloway or flathead, charter a boat to access deeper holes in Gippsland Lakes.

There's a vibrant food and wine scene, with plenty of cafes and restaurants lining the waterfront. If you're travelling with kids, head down to the Metung Pub at midday, when local pelicans flock to gobble up fish scraps.

Thanks to its scenic setting, Metung is a hub for artists and creatives. There are a wealth of studios and galleries to explore, showcasing everything from painting and sculpture to jewellery and glasswork.

Getting around

Metung is four hours east of Melbourne at the end of the Great Alpine Road. From the CBD, the drive to Metung should take around 3.5 hours. A train service also runs from Melbourne to Bairnsdale, with a connecting bus to Swan Reach.
