Get cultured in Portland. Oregon’s largest city lies at the junction of the Columbia and Willamette rivers, with the snow-capped summit of Mount Hood looming overhead. It’s dotted with leafy parks that can be explored on foot or by bicycle and boasts plenty of eclectic cafes and craft breweries where you can refuel throughout the day. Hands-on exhibits await at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, while the Portland Art Museum houses exceptional Asian and Native American collections.
Explore Crater Lake National Park. Nestled within the Cascade Mountains, Crater Lake is the ancient caldera of an extinct volcano that erupted more than 7,000 years ago. It is renowned for its intense blue colouration and is best explored along the famous Rim Drive. Hiking trails lead to spectacular viewpoints overlooking the lake while the park can be explored by cross-country skiers and snowshoers in the winter months.
Relax on Cannon Beach. Featuring a wide expanse of sand dotted with jagged rock formations, Cannon Beach is one of the most photogenic destinations on Oregon’s north coast. Birdwatchers can spot tufted puffins on Haystack Rock while families can fossick in the tide pools of Arcadia Beach. Hiking trails wind through adjacent Ecola State Park, which offers views toward the offshore Tillamook Rock Light.
Getting around Oregon
Portland International Airport is the main aviation gateway to Oregon and has flights to destinations across North America. The Empire Builder, Coast Starlight and Amtrak Cascades trains travel through Oregon, connecting many of its towns and cities. Long-distance buses are also available for getting around the state.
