One of the most recognisable landmarks in Osaka, the Umeda Sky building rises 170 metres above the cityscape. It’s comprised of two 40-storey towers, with the two uppermost storeys connected via bridges. You can also catch an elevator across the dramatic atrium-esque void in the centre, which provides unforgettable views of the city.
Don’t miss visiting the building’s observation deck, which is one of the bridges connecting the two towers. The roof has been designed like a glass doughnut, providing 360-degree city vistas and letting you feel the force of the wind at 170 metres high. On a clear day, you can see as far as Osaka and Awaji Island.
Afterwards, venture down to the basement level to see old images of Osaka from the 1920s and explore the various gourmet street-food stalls and restaurants along the Takimi Koji Underground Eat Street. Near the building you’ll find the Naka-Shizen community garden, which offers a peaceful respite from the city’s bustle.
Getting there
The Umeda Sky Building is about 2.5 kilometres from the centre of Osaka, easily reached in 20 minutes on the Midosuji Line to Umeda Station. After you alight, walk about 950 metres to the building.
