About Migdal

Overlooking the Sea of Galilee, Migdal is a historic town founded by German Catholics in 1908. It provides a base for exploring the dramatic landscapes and heritage sites of Arbel Nature Reserve, as well as the sacred summit of the Mount of Beatitudes.

Things to do in Migdal

On the Sea of Galilee’s western shore is Tamar Beach, where you can refresh with a swim or rent a boat to explore the lake at your leisure. It’s a short stroll from Villa Melchett, an elegant, whitewashed residence built by Sir Alfred Mond in the 1920s. Join a guided tour to learn about the Zionist’s legacy and see objects from the family estate.

Sprawling south of Migdal is the Arbel Nature Reserve, which encompasses a monumental cliff that offers magnificent views across the Jordan Valley. It not only provides a habitat for native plants and wildlife but it also protects several heritage sites and antiquities. Don’t miss the Arbel Fortress and Caves, which have been carved into the cliff and can be accessed along a well-maintained hiking trail.

If you drive in the other direction from Migdal, you’ll arrive at the Mount of Beatitudes, which is believed to be where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount. It is located along the 65-kilometre-long Jesus Trail that winds through the Galilee region. In addition to the remains of an old cistern and monastery, the Mount of Beatitudes boasts a magnificent Roman Catholic chapel designed by Antonio Barluzzi.
